Commissioners in Westmoreland County are voting to accept a bridge loan from the state treasurer’s office. They are getting more than $11,000,000 to temporarily fund the county’s Human Services Department.
Commissioner Ted Kopas said it was “shameful” that he and the other commissioners had to vote in favor of taking out a loan and paying interest due to the continued state budget gridlock in Harrisburg.
Westmoreland County officials have furloughed more than 100 workers in order to cut costs as they wait for full funding from the state. They say additional furloughs could be necessary if state lawmakers do not pass a budget measure soon.
