The Big Beaver Borough Volunteer Fire Department is planning to end service next year if local leaders don’t start paying firefighters.
Chief Matt Straub says the department is critically short on volunteers and is not able to keep operating without attracting new firefighters by offering compensation. Last month, the Borough Council rejected a proposal to hire a fire administrator and lay out plans to provide wages to part-time firefighters.
Straub says emergency responses by his department will stop on January first if there is no further action from local leaders.
