Quarterback Mason Heintschel threw for a freshman Pitt record 423 yards, tossing three touchdown passes as the Panthers dominated NC State on Saturday, 53-34. It was Pitt’s fourth straight win, all since Heintschel replaced Eli Holstein as the starting quarterback. One of his touchdown passes was an 84-yard beauty to Blue Hicks in the third quarter.
Hicks caught four passes for 120 yards. Kenny Johnson had seven receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown. His second quarter score was a spectacular catch-and-run on which he broke a tackle, spun, and then stretched to the pylon as he was being brought down. He injured a shoulder on the play and did not return for the second half.
Pitt travels cross-country to Stanford next Saturday.
