Mike Tomlin and the Steelers love splash plays, but only when they’re making them. When their opponent does it, repeatedly as Cincinnati did last week, the coach says it can ruin the day. Tomlin held his weekly news conference yesterday and said he’s hoping for a better effort all around this week as the Steelers begin a crucial three-game set against some of the top teams in football.
He says it starts this Sunday against Green Bay.
After the Packers, the Steelers will play the Colts and Chargers before returning to AFC North play with a rematch against the Bengals.
After re-tooling the secondary in the off-season, Tomlin is still waiting to see the result he anticipated, and the Bengals game was a step backwards.
Tomlin says the Steelers have to stop the run, and can’t afford to let teams control the game with their running backs.
Tomlin said he is optimistic that wide receiver Calvin Austin III will be able to play after missing the last two games with a shoulder injury. Linebacker Malik Harrison could be activated from injured reserve. Cornerback Corey Trice Jr. is close to being designated for return after spending the first portion of the season on IR, and quarterback Logan Woodside has been released from the practice squad, meaning either Will Howard or Skylar Thompson could be designated to return soon.
Tomlin also reported that Pro Bowl special teams captain Miles Killebrew has had season-ending knee surgery.
