The Indiana School District Superintendent has responded to the news that a bill has been proposed to force schools using Native American Imagery in mascots and logos to change.
The bill was introduced by Democratic State Representative Christopher Rabb of Philadelphia and this marks his fifth attempt at getting the bill through state government. Four other states have passed similar laws.
Superintendent Robert Heinrich said that the use of the name “Indians” is out of respect and never meant to be a slur against Native Americans, and he added that the district is very considerate about that imagery.
Heinrich said that a rebranding of the school district could cost thousands of dollars, but he says if the community says it should change, they will do so.
