A motions hearing is scheduled in Indiana County Court today for 38-year-old Michael Aaron Whitfield of Greensburg, who is charged with assaulting a woman with a box knife and stealing her vehicle – with her 9-year-old in it – in July of 2023. The child leaped out of the vehicle as it was being driven away.
Whitfield is charged with two counts each of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment, and single counts of attempted kidnapping, attempted kidnapping to facilitate a felony, robbery of a motor vehicle, robbery-inflicting serious injury, and terroristic threats. He also faces criminal charges in Westmoreland County.
He’s accused of cutting the woman on her face and neck in the parking lot of Keeper of the Flame in Blairsville, stealing her SUV, then driving to Derry and robbing an ice cream shop and a food truck. Police said he left the SUV there and stole a pickup truck. He was apprehended in Georgia the next day.
Whitfield filed an omnibus pretrial motion in September of last year. His hearing today is at 10 AM before Judge Michael Clark.
