The Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office is alerting vehicle owners to a growing high-tech method of car theft. Authorities report that some thieves are using wireless devices to unlock and start vehicles by intercepting the same digital signals transmitted by owners’ key fobs.
Greensburg locksmith Ron Paluzzi told TribLive that this tactic is becoming fairly common, noting that criminals can sometimes amplify the signal from a key fob inside a home.
As a precaution, the DA’s office is advising residents to store their keys well away from doors and windows to help prevent these thefts.
