The Pirates’ Paul Skenes has been selected as the Baseball Digest/Inside Edge MLB Pitcher of the Year, and the vote wasn’t even close. Skenes got 21 first-place votes, two second-place votes, and one third-place vote to easily beat out the Tigers’ Tarik Skubal, who got one first-place vote, and Garret Crochet of the Red Sox, who got two.
Seattle’s Cal Raleigh was chosen as MLB Player of the Year, and the Red Sox’ Aroldis Chapman, the former Pirate, is the MLB Relief Pitcher of the Year.
In the MLB Division Round of the playoffs, the Blue Jays blew out the Yankees 13-7 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. The Mariners slipped by the Tigers, 3-2 to even that series at one game each. The NL resumes tonight with the Dodgers up one game to none over the Phillies and the Brewers leading the Cubs, 1-0.

The Arizona Fall League begins its season tonight in Scottsdale. The Pirates have eight prospects in the league, playing for the Salt River Rafters. They include Altoona star outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez, power-hitting first baseman Tony Blanco Jr., outfielder Will Taylor, and pitchers Dominic Perachi, Derek Diamond, Joshua Loeschorn, Carlson Reed, and Jaden Woods.
The Rafters also include players from the Angels, Diamondbacks, Red Sox, and Rockies. Their first game is tomorrow night against the Glendale Desert Dogs.
