UPDATE
At a press conference Monday afternoon, state troopers provided more information about the officer involved shooting that happened Sunday evening in Grant Township.
Troopers were dispatched to a home in the three-thousand block of Dixonville Road in Deckers Point at about five o’clock yesterday afternoon to investigate a physical assault.
35-year-old Jonathan James Pearce of Marion Center reportedly got into a physical altercation with his neighbor, identified only as an adult male. Following the altercation, Pearce allegedly ran his truck into the neighbor’s vehicle. He then retreated to his home, where he acquired a rifle and fired shots toward two adults and two young children. He then barricaded himself in his home, where he started a fire inside.
Police say he then climbed onto the roof of the home, armed with a shotgun, and fired at troopers on the ground below. They returned fire and fatally wounded the suspect.
State Trooper Cliff Greenfield thanked all who responded to that incident.
An autopsy is underway, including a psychological autopsy, which is an investigation that aims to understand the psychological factors that may have contributed to a person’s death.
No one else was hurt in the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
