An Altoona man who went missing as he was flying his ultra-light aircraft in Indiana County was killed when his plane crashed yesterday.
State police confirmed 75-year-old David Edward Wittmer was discovered less than a mile from where it took off in Young Township. He reportedly was practicing some touch-and-go landings when he took off and never returned around 6:00 last night. The search for him resumed this morning after last night’s efforts were unsuccessful. A volunteer pilot assisting with the aerial search found the plane crashed in a corn field along Coal Run Road less than a mile away from where it took off. A member of the State Police Aviation Patrol Unit then confirmed the location of the aircraft and directed first responders to the scene. Wittmer was found dead near the crash site.
The Indiana County Coroner’s office is assisting state police. Police say there was no foul play and troopers are investigating it as an accidental death. The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified.
