In conjunction with the upcoming America’s 250 anniversary, a new GeoTrail has been established that will lead hikers to 12 different sites that were significant in the late 1700’s.
The Indiana County 1776 GeoTrail is a joint effort between the county tourist bureau, the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County, historical societies in Homer City, Blairsville and Saltsburg, and the Indiana County Friends of the Parks. Each Geocache that is found on the trail will focus on a different topic that relates to the early years of the formation of Indiana County, focusing on what life was like in the area, who lived there, what was appealing about the location, and how people lived their lives. Trail maps are available at the tourist bureau, Blue Spruce Park, the Purchase Line School office and at the Blairsville, Indiana and Saltsburg historical societies. People can also download the passport from the GeoTrail’s website.
Each site will feature a woodblock design that people must create a rubbing of and then turn back into the tourist bureau or Blue Spruce park office to receive a geocoin prize while supplies last.
Purchase Line School District has partnered with this group to create a duplicate set of 12 geocaches to be used at schools, and that equipment can be loaned to other schools in the county that want to use them.
