Back from Ireland, Steelers players were at the team’s UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the South Side yesterday before departing for their bye week. When they return, they may be able to get some help from their injured reserve list. After sitting out the first four weeks, rookie quarterback Will Howard and rookie cornerback Donte Kent are eligible to return from injured reserve, and both said yesterday they are ready to get to work. Kent can also return punts and kicks. Once they begin practicing, the Steelers have 21 days to activate them, release them, or keep them on injured reserve for the rest of the season.
As for the active players, the reviews of Sunday’s win over the Vikings were generally good, but the theme was “We can get better.”
Tight end Pat Freiermuth says there is more work for the Steelers to do.
Linebacker Patrick Queen says the Steelers’ defense is only beginning to show what it can do.
With Calvin Austin expected to miss several games with a shoulder injury, wide receiver Ben Skowronek says he’ll leave the decision on who fills Austin’s role up to the coaches. Meanwhile, he’ll just do what he’s always done…play hard-nosed, physical football, including jumping inside to block in the run game.
Skowronek says with a dad from Connellsville who played at Penn State, and with his uncle being former NFL quarterback Trent Green, he has been a football person all his life.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have injuries in their secondary and they have signed rookie safety Sebastian Castro off the Steelers’ practice squad. Castro was an undrafted free agent from Iowa who impressed the Steelers in training camp and made five tackles against the Bucs in their preseason game.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is expected to miss the next two to three games after injuring his hamstring Sunday against the Chiefs. Although favored to win the AFC North, the Ravens have started 1-3.
