The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue is warning people about a phishing scam going on using their name.
The scammers are using text messages to impersonate department officials to try to trick victims into updating their personal banking information, when they are really trying to get that info to use against them. Similar reports surfaced in Philadelphia where the city’s Department of Revenue went through the same scam.
Officials advise everyone to verify the status of any refund only through official channels, and to not click on any links in unsolicited text messages. Taxpayers can check the status of their refunds online by visiting the department’s official online tax hub, myPATH, or by calling 1-888-PATAXES. Taxpayers will be prompted to provide their Social Security number and requested refund amount to obtain the current status.
Anyone who receives a suspicious text should report it to the Department of Revenue at 717-425-2495.
