The Pirates suffered their 35th one-run loss of the season and their 90th game overall, 2-1, in Cincinnati yesterday.
The Reds scored twice on back-to-back RBI singles off Braxton Ashcraft in the fifth inning. The Pirates scored in the eighth when Spencer Horwitz hit a pinch-hit double and later scored on a groundout by Nick Yorke. Bryan Reynolds almost tied the game when he hit a ball with home run distance in the ninth, but Reds right fielder Noelvi Marte made a leaping grab above the fence to pull it back.
The Pirates end the season with three games in Atlanta starting tonight, with Mitch Keller (6-15, 4.22 ERA) making his final start of the season against the Braves’ Joey Wentz (5-6, 5.46 ERA). Wentz started the year with the Pirates and was waived in June. The Twins picked him up and waived him in July, when the Braves claimed him.
