The Pirates’ Paul Skenes crowned his spectacular sophomore season with another dominant performance, doing his part in an extra-inning win over the Reds. Joe Block has the story.
Manager Donnie Kelly enjoyed watching Skenes in action.
Kelly says Skenes, who set the Pirates team record for strikeouts by a right-hander, isn’t concerned about individual stats.
The Pirates’ relief corps has been solid for the last week. Last night was the first time in a week they gave up any runs.
The Bucs look for their fourth win in a row this afternoon. Right-hander Braxton Ashcraft takes the mound for the Pirates. The rookie is 4-3 with a 2.62 ERA. Lefty Nick Lodolo, who’s 8-8 with a 3.44 ERA, pitches for the Reds. It’s a 12:15 airtime, 12:40 first pitch on WCCS.
Oneil Cruz left the game with a left ankle injury in the ninth inning after running into the center field wall in the eighth. Other injury updates from Todd Tomczyk, the senior director of sports medicine:
- Catcher Joey Bart’s wrist injury is still being evaluated.
- Catcher Endy Rodriguez will begin throwing in a couple of weeks after elbow surgery last month.
- Infielder Enmanuel Valdez will begin hitting within the week after having shoulder surgery in May.
