Spirit Airlines announced yesterday plans to furlough over 1800 flight attendants by the end of the year.
The union that represents the airline’s attendants said on Monday that Spirit would seek people willing to take voluntary furloughs for six months or a year starting November 1st before moving forward with the mandatory layoffs on December 1st. This comes as flight activity is expected to slow down for the winter months and as the low-cost carrier goes through its second bankruptcy proceeding in a year.
In a statement, the airline called the decision difficult and said “we are committed to treating them with care and respect during this process.”
Spirit filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month. The company is the sole commercial airliner operating out of Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe, and currently flies from there to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina and Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale in Florida.
