The Penguins started the preseason with a 2-1 shootout loss at Montreal. Forward prospect Tristan Broz had the only Pens’ goal in the game and the only goal in the shootout. Anthony Mantha, Tommy Novak, Ben Kindel and Avery Hayes were unsuccessful in their shootout attempts. Goaltender Joel Blomqvist stopped all eleven shots he faced before being replaced midway through the second period by Sergei Murashov. He stopped nineteen of twenty shots in regulation and overtime, then gave up two goals on five attempts in the shootout.
Coach Dan Muse appreciated the effort for the first game.
Muse said Ben Kindel, one of the Pens’ three first round draft choices this year, looked at ease on the ice, especially playing in Montreal.
The Penguins will play at Columbus tomorrow night.
