Manager Donnie Kelly says it took a while for starter Johan Oviedo to settle in after a rough first inning.
Rafael Flores made his Major League debut and played first base yesterday. He went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk and scorched a liner up the middle that was fielded for a groundout. Kelly says Flores barreled up on the ball.
Johan Oviedo says he didn’t feel comfortable on the mound when the game started.
The Pirates are off today and welcome the A’s to PNC Park for the final three home games of the season, starting tomorrow night.
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that pitcher Jared Jones is throwing three times a week from about sixty feet and remains on schedule to return from elbow surgery within his projected ten-to-twelve months.
Injured catcher Endy Rodriguez and infielder Enmanuel Valdez will join Jones in the Pirates’ dugout this weekend. Both are on schedule for a return, Valdez to likely play winter ball, while winter ball is uncertain for Rodriguez. Outfielder Ronnie Simon is scheduled for shoulder surgery early next month.
