Former President Barack Obama on Tuesday called the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk a tragedy that should be recognized regardless of political affiliation.
Speaking at an event in Pennsylvania, Obama said he did not personally know Kirk but was familiar with some of his ideas, which he strongly opposed. Even so, the former president noted that Kirk was a young man with a family, friends, and a wide network of supporters who cared deeply for him.
Obama said we have to extend grace to people who are in mourning and in shock. He added that the foundation of American democracy depends on the ability to hold deep disagreements without turning to violence.
