IUP has received $2 million from the National Science Foundation to help students earn data science degrees.
The Experiential Pathways And Networks for Data Science, or EXPANDS Opportunities Scholarship Program will support 36 scholars over the six years of the project, with a particular focus on transfer students from regional and partner community colleges. This will help them transfer to IUP to complete their bachelor’s and graduate degrees in data sciences. For the program, the university will partner with Westmoreland County Community College, Community College of Allegheny County, Butler County Community College and Penn Highlands. IUP’s John J. and Char Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Dean Dr. Steve Hovan called it a win for not just the students, but the workforce as well as there is a significant shortage of data scientists, with a continued demand for employees in that field.
The project predicts that 27 EXPANDS scholars will receive both bachelors and masters degrees while four others will receive undergraduate degrees and five to receive masters.
