Today marks the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
On that day, hijackers seized four commercial airplanes, crashing them into the World Trade Center towers in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Thousands of lives were lost, including the 40 passengers and crew members aboard United Flight 93, which went down in Somerset County.
Commemorative ceremonies are being held this morning in New York City, at the Pentagon, and at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville.
