The Steelers’ secondary is banged up after just one game, with two starters knocked out of Sunday’s win against the Jets. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has a sore hamstring but is not expected to miss Sunday’s home opener against Seattle. However, safety DeShon Elliott’s status is uncertain. He’s already been ruled out for this Sunday with a reported sprained MCL in his left knee and could be a candidate for injured reserve.
Yesterday, the Steelers agreed to a contract with free agent safety Jabril Peppers, a former first round draft pick who has played eleven seasons with the Browns, Giants, and Patriots.
Meanwhile, Mike Tomlin and his coaching staff have plenty of work to do after a mistake-filled first game. His linemen didn’t perform well on offense or defense, meaning the Steelers’ running game was bogged down while the Jets’ runners ran for 182 yards.
Tomlin said there were plenty of “first game” problems on Sunday.
The coach is fired up about the home opener against Seattle this week.
Tomlin wasn’t thrilled with the play of either of his offensive tackles. Broderick Jones gave up three sacks on the left side, but the coach says the former first round draft pick is still confident he can play in the NFL.
Tomlin expects the defensive line, especially Keeanu Benton to make a better showing this week against the Seahawks.
In addition to Elliott missing this week’s game, first round draft pick defensive lineman Derrick Harmon has been ruled out with a knee injury suffered in the preseason and linebacker Malik Harrison is out, also with a knee injury.
