PennDOT is putting out the call to high school students to take part in the agency’s Innovations Challenge.
The contest is open to 9th to 12th graders in Pennsylvania, regardless of their school’s learning model. It is meant to encourage problem-solving skills, creative and strategic-thinking abilities as they compete against their peers to solve a real-world transportation problem. This year’s contest is asking students to develop a concept for the use of Artificial Intelligence in work zones to dramatically improve safety for work crews and those who use the road. It must outline how PennDOT can use smarter systems to prevent accidents and protect those working on the roads. The concept should also include cost-benefit information, statewide deployment implications and public outreach efforts.
Regional winners will be selected and invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT Secretary and a panel of judges, who will determine the statewide winner. A cash award will be given to the winner.
Submissions will be accepted until January 30th of 2026. For complete details on the challenge, log on to the PennDOT Innovations Challenge website.
