Angela Naveran Whited was born in 1928 in San Francisco. She grew up in Battle Mountain, Nevada, raised by her parents Antonio and Carmen, who were immigrants from the Basque country in Spain.
She was the first member of her family to attend college thanks to a four-year Harold’s Club scholarship; she graduated in English from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1950. Angela went on to teach briefly in Battle Mountain, then at American schools in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and Lima, Peru.
Following a year working in the Washington, D.C., office of Nevada Senator George Malone, she returned to Nevada to teach reading, English and social studies at Sparks Intermediate and Sparks High School.
She married Fred E. Whited in 1961, and together they raised two daughters. They subsequently divorced.
Angela taught briefly in Eugene, Oregon, and completed her career by teaching Spanish at Swope Middle School and Billinghurst Middle School, in Reno. Upon retiring, she threw her energies into historic preservation projects in Reno as well as political campaigns.
Angela moved to Indiana, PA, in 2011 to be closer to family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Theresa Cordova.
She is survived by daughter Toni Whited and son-in-law Gennady Fiksel of Ann Arbor, MI; daughter Tamara Whited and son-in-law Jean-Yves Boulard of Indiana; granddaughter Lily Boulard of New York City; niece Angela Cordova; and nephews Jeff, Antonio, and Jon Cordova.
She will remain in beloved memory of all who knew her for her generosity, curiosity, and boundless optimism for a better world.
