The Steelers’ players elected their captains yesterday, choosing defensive stalwarts Cam Heyward and TJ Watt, along with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and special teams Pro Bowler Miles Killebrew.
It’s the eleventh time Heyward has been named captain, the fifth time for Watt, and the fourth for Killebrew. Rodgers is a captain for the fifteenth time, the first with the Steelers.
The Steelers also yesterday signed running back Jaylen Warren to a three-year contract replacing this year’s contract with a raise of about $3 million and adding a two-year extension. The total value of the contract is $17.5 million, $12 million of which is guaranteed.
Warren started his career as a junior college player. He says it’s a long way from Juco to the NFL.
The Steelers take on the Jets on Sunday in New Jersey. Rodgers will be facing his former team in his first game as a Steeler.
Helping protect Rodgers’ blind side will be left tackle Broderick Jones. He says the future Hall of Fame quarterback has not made a big deal out of the unique circumstance of playing against his former team, (which, by the way, will be starting former Steeler Justin Fields.)
Killebrew, says he tells his teammates special teams is a vital part of the game.
Mike Tomlin has said it’s possible the Steelers are not finished putting together the roster yet for the season opener. Yesterday, they reportedly hosted for Seattle and Carolina linebacker and special teams player Jon Rhattigan. He was among the final roster cuts for the Panthers last week.
