A proposed solar farm in Derry Township has some citizens upset over the potential environmental impacts.
A public hearing is scheduled for 5:30 PM on Tuesday, after the Derry Township Supervisors voting meeting, to allow the public to give testimony on the Weimer Solar Farm that will go in on Newhouse Road just north of New Alexandria. But neighbors are not happy with the idea, saying that the proposed site borders residential homes, flood-prone areas and wildlife corridors that feed directly into the Loyalhanna River and State Game Lands.
A petition on change.org is calling the project a “rushed land-use gamble that sidesteps transparency, threatens property rights, and shifts long-term costs and risks onto neighbors while profits leave town.” It demands a full environmental impact study, public disclosure of all communications and agreements, a formal review of the township’s handling of the proposed solar farm and a commitment to uphold the state Sunshine Act.
That petition as of this morning has 160 signatures.
