A bad fifth inning in the field spelled doom for the Pirates yesterday at Fenway Park. Greg Brown has the story of a loss to the Red Sox.
Manager Donnie Kelly was pleased with the trip to Boston and the entire road trip.
Kelly says Mitch Keller didn’t get the result he deserved.
The Pirates are off today and return home tomorrow to open a three-game series against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers.
Pirates fans are puzzled by the team’s approach to its pending free agents. Yesterday, they gave up Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who was claimed on waivers by Toronto after the Pirates decided a month ago not to get anything for him at the trade deadline. A similar scenario played out last week when they designated pitcher Andrew Heaney for assignment. They chose to keep Heaney at the trade deadline and instead traded Bailey Falter, a pitcher they still had contract control over.
The Pirates also lost reliever Tim Mayza on a waiver claim by the Phillies. He was a player they were not going to sign anyway and in the case of both Mayza and Kiner-Falefa, general manager Ben Cherington said he wanted to give both of them a chance to be claimed by a playoff contender.
Infielder Ryan Kreidler, a waiver claim by the Pirates August 24th from the Tigers, joined the Bucs’ taxi squad yesterday in Boston and was then activated for the game when Kiner-Falefa was claimed by the Blue Jays.
On The Ben Cherington Show on WCCS, the GM said the Pirates will add players today to get to the expanded roster limit of 28, but he will likely make other moves this month to get a look at some of their prospects currently playing for Indianapolis.
The Pirates can add a position player and a pitcher to the active roster today.
