The Pirates limp back home tonight after taking a beating on the road in Milwaukee and Chicago. Dan Zangrilli has a recap of yesterday’s loss at Wrigley Field.
Manager Donnie Kelly says the Pirates are not measuring up offensively.
Kelly was happy with the work of Carmen Mlodzinski, who threw the first four innings in a spot start.
On The Ben Cherington Show on WCCS, the Pirates’ general manager commented on a couple of Bucs who have ailing elbows: catcher Endy Rodriguez and pitcher Jared Jones.
Despite three elbow injuries in the last two years, Cherington says the Pirates still think Rodriguez can be a big league catcher. (Rodriguez just had nerve transposition surgery to move a nerve in his elbow to a different location.)
Cherington also said Jared Jones will remain a starting pitcher rather than move to the bullpen when he returns his elbow surgery next spring.
Jared Triolo is finally finding his groove at the plate since his return from Indianapolis, and the GM says the team has always thought there was more offense in Triolo’s game than he’s showed.
The Pirates are home to face the top team in the American League East, the Toronto Blue Jays. Coming off the worst start of his Major League career, Paul Skenes (7-9, 2.13 ERA) faces the Jays’ Kevin Gausman (6-9, 3.79 ERA). It’s a 6:15 airtime, 6:40 first pitch on WCCS.
