A canine named Penny is being credited with helping to save the lives of an Upper St. Clair family from a Wednesday morning house fire.
Flames ignited on the back porch of a home on Old Meadow Road just after 4:30 a.m. Fire Chief Ted Hale says the dog alerted the sleeping family to the fire before those flames reached inside the residence.
Two adults, a one-year-old baby and Penny all escaped without injury. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
