The State House on Monday approved a bill to increase sales tax revenue for mass transit.
The proposal will direct $300 million to mass transit groups in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Many agencies have expressed a need for more funding. The bill will also provide $600 million in borrowing to fund road projects, with about half of them being rural roads.
The vote was along party lines in the state house. Representative Brad Rowe, a Republican representing the Erie and Crawford county areas, said that the legislation does not provide enough money, and said that those riding mass transit should pay what he feels their fair share.
Both State Representatives Jim Struzzi and Brian Smith voted against the bill. It now heads to the Senate, where it faces an uncertain fate in the Republican-controlled chamber.
