A bid by Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle to buy back the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Fenway Sports Group has reportedly fallen short.
On the 32 Thoughts podcast from SportsNet in Canada, Elliotte Friedman said the cost for the team, if the majority ownership is up for sale, would be at least $1.8 billion, and that the Lemieux Group is not close to that number. The figure was based on the closing price for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Fenway Sports Group has suggested that they are trying to get some people to buy minority ownership in the team, but resisted the notion that majority ownership options would be considered.
