Samantha Martin was gritty in the circle against a slugging team from Palo Cedro, California as Indiana bashed its way to an 11-4 win in their second game of the Junior League Softball World Series in Kirkland, Washington.
Martin gave up four runs over five innings and Indiana fell behind 2-0 in the second inning, but for the second straight game, Indiana plated eleven runs, six in the third inning and five in the fourth. Leah Nelson and Ella Worthington both scored on a ground-ball error to tie the game, then Sophie Boyer’s ground ball single drove in the lead run. Then after Martin reached base on another California error, Tenley Anderson doubled home two runs and Sophie Thomas doubled her home. Then in the fourth, Aunika Brooks stroked a two-run single with the bases loaded and Nelson and Worthington hit back-to-back run-scoring doubles before Nelson scooted home on a wild pitch for Indiana’s eleventh run.
Coach Jenny Brewer says her girls keep pushing, even when they fall behind.
Brewer says she tells her team that in a World Series, every team has good hitters, so they have to fight back.
Brewer says her team members lean on each other.
Worthington and Boyer each had two hits to lead Indiana, which got hits by ten of the twelve girls in the lineup. Martin threw five innings and Reese Mahaffey tossed the final two.
Indiana will play the Southwest champions, Columbus, Texas, today at 4 PM. Texas lost to Canada 7-4 yesterday. Indiana beat Canada, 11-3 on Sunday.
