The first workout of Steelers training camp is today at St. Vincent, and with so many new faces on a roster that lost sixteen players from the team that finished last season, coach Mike Tomlin will be watching intently right from the start.
Only offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo will be on the sidelines, with a soft tissue injury that Tomlin said would limit him early in camp. Backup Spencer Anderson will take first-team reps in Seumalo’s place.
Tomlin says he’s eager to begin writing the story of the 2025 season.
Tomlin says there are plenty of new faces in camp, but that doesn’t mean they are unfamiliar.
The coach says new quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a “workaholic”, and he’ll try to rein him in, not to keep him fresh but to give others some work.
Linebacker TJ Watt has a new four-year contract, and while he’s now in his thirties, he says he’s just as eager as ever to get to work on winning a championship.
Watt was not with the team for the offseason workout schedule, but he says he was training from his home base in Wisconsin while his contract was being worked out, and his teammates know that.
The Steelers have not won a playoff game since Watt was drafted in 2017, and he’s out to change that.
General Manager Omar Khan said yesterday that he feels “really good” about the newest version of the Steelers, but “if an opportunity comes available,” he’ll certainly look at adding to the group. The Steelers are still reportedly interested in finding help at safety and wide receiver.
