A bill to help firefighters and fire companies is making its way through the state legislature.
House Bill 1306 passed the house unanimously in late June and was referred to the senate. The bill’s goal is to protect the income of volunteer firefighters by excluding certain contributions from a length of service award program from the definition of income under Pennsylvania’s Earned Income Tax, meaning that those contributions would not be taxable income. The goal of the bill is to incentivize volunteer firefighters and help them retain more of their compensation. Currently, the taxation is one of the issues facing fire companies when it comes to recruitment and retention.
The bill is currently in the Finance Committee in the State Senate.
