JJ Spaun was having a terrible final round at the US Open even before he started play, and especially before thunderstorms struck at Oakmont yesterday and interrupted the final round for 96 minutes. He started the day at a downtown Pittsburgh drugstore, getting some medicine for his two-year-old daughter, who had a stomach issue. Then, he shot fives on the first five holes, bogeyed five of the first six holes, and was falling out of contention. But he changed into a different set of clothes and stormed back to win the Open with a two-over par 72, including a 64-and-a-half foot birdie putt on 18 to clinch the title by two strokes over Robert MacIntyre.
Spaun was the only player in the tournament to finish under par, winning by going birdie/birdie on the 71st and 72nd holes. Spaun had never finished in the top twenty at any of golf’s four major championships.
