The Penguins have re-signed forward Boko Imama to a one-year contract. His season was ended by biceps surgery in March. With Imama signed, the Penguins still have eighteen players who were under contract at the end of the season scheduled to become free agents on July 1st, ten of them unrestricted. The biggest name on the unrestricted list is defenseman Matt Grzelcyk.
The Penguins have also signed 19-year-old prospect Melvin Fernstrom, a forward they acquired in the Drew O’Connor/Marcus Pettersson trade with Vancouver. He was a 2024 third round draft choice of the Canucks and will play in his native Sweden this year, which could allow the Pens to delay the effective date of the three-year entry-level contract until the 2026-’27 season. Fernstrom was the Swedish Hockey League rookie of the year this past season.
