Pennsylvania’s Attorney General is joining a bipartisan coalition of 28 Attorneys General in filing a lawsuit that will block the sale of consumer data by DNA Genetic Testing Company 23andMe.
The sale was proposed as part of bankruptcy proceedings for the company. The lawsuit objects to the auction of personal genetic information that was collected over the history of the company without the customer’s consent. The argument presented by the coalition is that the information collected is too sensitive to be sold without each person’s consent.
PA Attorney General Dave Sunday said the group is making sure the sensitive information isn’t misused, exposed in future data breaches or used in ways that consumers never thought of when they signed up for the service. He advises that anyone who is filing proofs of claim in the 23andMe bankruptcy case still has time to do so. The deadline is July 14th.
