156 golfers, including eleven former U.S. Open champions, took their swings at Oakmont yesterday, the first day of practice for this year’s Open. 2024 champ Bryson DeChambeau is one of the two two-time champions, along with Brooks Koepka.
Two of the world’s top golfers, Justin Thomas and Xander Shauffele played the course yesterday. Thomas says the rain has softened Oakmont, but the legendary course still demands that you stay out of the rough or pay the consequences.
Shauffele says the premium ball strikers will be have the advantage in the Open.
The USGA yesterday completed the field by adding three players: Ryan Fox who moved up 43 spots in the world rankings with his win at the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday; Cameron Young; and Bud Cauley, who earned their way in at the final qualifier last week in Columbus. This year’s field includes fifteen amateur golfers.
The Open tees off on Thursday.
