Many schools have wrapped up for the year this week, but for the Indiana School District, this will be the last day for one of the district’s elementary schools.
Today marks the official decommissioning of the Horace Mann Elementary School. The building was originally commissioned in 1908, originally called the Second Ward building, it had classes for elementary and secondary students. It also served as a high school on two different stints before it served all elementary grades and then later on, only fourth and fifth graders.
Last June, the Indiana School Board voted unanimously to move all fourth and fifth grade students to Eisenhower, which will open next year. In hearings about the closure of the school, the public expressed an interest in keeping the building in use for educational purposes. The district leases portions of the building to Merakey, a company that specializes in special needs services for school-age and adult students.
Ceremonies are scheduled for 9:30 this morning at the school, which will include musical tributes from Indiana School District Students and remarks from distinguished alumni and other guests.
