A new text-message scam is making the rounds in Pennsylvania, and the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts says it is being targeted.
The AOPC, which administers courts on district, county and state levels, says that the texts spoof or imitate the state courts, the Unified Judicial System website advising that the victim has an outstanding traffic ticket that needs to be resolved on threat of further penalties, and must be paid via a URL leading to a fake website set up by the scammers. The text will also go into detail about the online fictitious actions, and also says that it will impact the victim’s court records and credit history.
A spokesperson for the AOPC said that they will never place text messages or phone calls to solicit payment by credit card, gift card or any other means of electronic transfer. If you receive this text message, you are advised to not give out any personal or payment information. Instead, call the police and the state office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection at 800-441-2555 or sending an email to scams@attorneygeneral.gov
