The 2025 Pennsylvania Primary Election ran smooth across the state and in Indiana County.
All 69 county precincts reported in within two hours of the polls closing at 8:00 PM, and out of 42,953 registered voters, 10,703 votes were cast either in-person or by mail-in or absentee ballots. That represents nearly 25% of the county’s voting population. Indiana County Commissioner Mike Keith said he was surprised by that total after what he saw when he checked in at several precincts.
Commissioner Sherene Hess also thanked the poll workers and the candidates who decided to run.
At the commonwealth level, Secretary of State Al Schmidt said everything ran well, with county election boards reporting only minor issues. He said that out of 800,000 mail-in ballots sent out to voters across the state, 70% were returned.
Many of the races were either unopposed or had enough candidates to fill the ballot positions in November. One race that will be contested in November is the Indiana School Board at large race. The top four candidates would receive the party’s nomination out of seven who were on the ballot. Incumbents Julia Trimarchi Cuccaro and Tom Harley along with challenger Eric Brocious received nominations from both parties. Incumbent Quintina Thomas received the fourth nomination from the Democrats and fellow board member Jim Shaffer received the Republican nod.
Another contested race was for district three of the River Valley School Board. Current board member Nathan Baird failed to garner enough votes to get the one of two nominations available in each party. Tracy Richards and Tawnya Satler got the nod from both parties and will move to the November ballot.
