The scene was set for another Pirates meltdown but this time, they held together and beat the Braves. Joe Block has the recap.
In his first Ben Cherington Show on WCCS since the firing of manager Derek Shelton, the Pirates general manager says they have the perfect fit for the managerial job in Pittsburgh native Donnie Kelly.
Since taking over as manager, Kelly has also been performing his old duties as bench coach, but Cherington says help is on the way so he can concentrate on managing. It’s just a matter of adding to or adjusting the coaching staff.
Cherington acknowledged that the Pirates hadn’t given Shelton much to work with, and said everybody in the organization has a big job ahead.
Cherington had positive news about the possible returns from injury for Spencer Horwitz, Isaiah Kiner-Falefa, Nick Gonzalez, Endy Rodriguez, and Dauri Moreta. He was less certain about Oneil Cruz, who left Saturday’s game with lower back pain, and he said it may be more long-term for first baseman Enmanuel Valdez, with a shoulder injury.
The Pirates begin a three-game visit to New York tonight against the Mets. Paul Skenes (3-4, 2.77 ERA) pitches for the Bucs against left-hander David Peterson (2-2, 3.05 ERA). It’s a 6:45 airtime, 7:10 first pitch on WCCS.
