The Public Utility Commission has begun an investigation of the power outages caused by the storms in southwestern Pennsylvania two weeks ago. Calling it a “comprehensive post-storm review”, the PUC says, in the words of Chairman Steve DeFrank, that it needs to “understand what happened, what worked what didn’t, and what can be done better moving forward.”
More than 557,000 customers lost power in the April 29th storms. The review will include an examination of how the power companies reacted to the outages and the adequacy of their emergency response plans. Some of the fixes were only temporary, to get the lights back on, and will require weeks and perhaps months to restore the systems entirely.
The PUC says the timeline for the review and subsequent consideration of follow-up actions is still undetermined.
