As part of the upcoming America 250 PA celebration, a special tree will be planted in Indiana County today.
A “Liberty Tree” will be planted in each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counites. Indiana County’s tree, a tulip poplar, will be put in place this evening at the White Township Recreation Complex. The location will allow the tree to be seen and enjoyed for years to come.
The tree represents the original Liberty Tree in Boston, where during the Revolutionary War, the Sons of Liberty met to discuss their opposition to Britain’s rule. When it became a symbol of the revolution, the British destroyed the original tree. This lead to Liberty Trees being planted throughout the 13 original colonies. Seeds from the scion of the original tree are being collected, grown into seedlings, and planted across the state.
A special tree-planting ceremony will be held today at 5:30.
