The Pirates suffered their fifth straight loss last night, and it was a bad sixth inning that did them in. Joe Block has the recap.
Carmen Mlodzinski threw four-and-two-thirds innings for the Pirates and gave up two solo home runs. Manager Derek Shelton says Mlodzinski did his job.

Reliever Chase Shugart gave up all four runs in the sixth inning. Shelton says the normally reliable Shugart “didn’t have it” last night.
The sixth inning could have been worse for the Pirates except for Oneil Cruz, who caught a fly ball and gunned down Victor Scott II at the plate with a 100 mile-per-hour peg.
In tonight’s second game of the series, Paul Skenes [3-3, 2.74 ERA] looks to rebound from last week’s rough start against the Cubs against Cardinals lefty-hander Matthew Liberatore [2-3, 3.44 ERA]. Airtime is 7:20, first pitch at 7:45 on WCCS.
