ESPN and multiple other sources report that former Penguins coach Mike Sullivan is on the verge of signing what could be the richest contract ever for a NHL coach and will take over the New York Rangers. And in a role reversal, former Rangers, Blue Jackets and Flyers coach John Tortorella could be one of his assistants. Sullivan was Tortorella’s assistant with the Rangers from 2009 to 2013. Several sports websites report the deal has already been signed. Sullivan is the all-time winningest coach in Penguins history, with 409 victories and two Stanley Cups.
ESPN also reports that David Quinn will not be on Sully’s staff in New York, at least for now, as he is a candidate for several openings in the NHL, including the Penguins’ job.
The career of former Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury came to an end last night as the Minnesota Wild were eliminated by Vegas, 3-2. He retires with 575 career wins, second only to former Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur’s 691. Fleury won three Stanley Cups, all with the Penguins.
Fleury was the number one overall draft choice in 2003, by the Penguins, for whom he played thirteen seasons and won a franchise record 375 games.
