Pitt basketball coach Jeff Capel’s best player, sophomore guard Jaland Lowe, yesterday entered the transfer portal. Lowe averaged 16.8 points, 5-5 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game last season.
Lowe is the fifth player the Panthers have lost to the portal since the season ended, joining Guillermo and Jorge Diaz Graham, Amsal Delalic, and Marlon Barnes. As of now, Capel has only four scholarship players on campus.
The annual rebuilding process for Capel is largely the result of Pitt losing the NIL battle to schools that can produce larger payoffs for transfer players. That results in less-than-desired win totals, and in Pitt’s case, a second straight season missing the NCAA Tournament.
