The Pirates closed out the spring with their fifth straight loss, this time to the Twins in Fort Myers. Joe Block has the story. (5-1 loss)
After the game, the Pirates reassigned pitchers Thomas Harrington, Carson Fulmer, Burch Smith, and Tanner Rainey to minor league camp along with outfielder/first baseman DJ Stewart. The veteran Stewart has an opt-out in his contract that he is expected to exercise. The moves appear to give Ji Hwan Bae, Jack Suwinski, and Ryan Borucki spots on the Opening Day roster on Thursday. Borucki must be added to the 40-man roster, which means someone else has to go, probably Jared Jones, to the 60-day injured list.
Manager Derek Shelton yesterday named right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski his fifth starter in the Bucs’ rotation, replacing Jones, who remains out with a sore elbow. The Pirates have not announced the results of medical imaging tests on Jones, but have already said they are seeking a second opinion, which could indicate a serious problem.
