IUP’s basketball teams had gone a combined 0-4 against their first round PSAC Tournament opponents, but those fortunes were reversed last night, with both teams advancing to the quarterfinals.
The night started with a win for Craig Carey’s Crimson Hawks women over Cal U. Todd Marino has the recap.
Carey says for IUP to win, everybody has to play their role.
The IUP men fell behind early but rallied from double-digits down to beat Slippery Rock. Jack Benedict reports.
Coach Joe Lombardi says he would have been happy no matter what the result last night.
Slippery Rock played without guard Luke Howes, who was stabbed in the arm in what police are calling a “random attack” by an unknown assailant outside a restaurant off new Castle Road in Butler Township yesterday afternoon.
The IUP women will play top seed Edinboro, a team they beat twice in the regular season, tipping off at 5:30 tomorrow night. The men will travel to top seed Gannon to play at 7:30 tomorrow night.
Other first round winners in the women’s PSAC bracket were Bloomsburg, 60-57 over East Stroudsburg, West Chester, which topped Millersville 64-56, and Seton Hill, which rolled over Clarion, 99-73.
For the men, Shepherd downed Shippensburg, 78-62, Millersville eliminated Lock Haven, 78-52, and Seton Hill knocked off Edinboro, 78-74.
