The District 6 playoffs continue tonight with the AAA and AA girls semifinals, and a chance for it to be a very special night when River Valley takes on Cambria Heights in AAA.
The Panthers’ Ava Persichetti enters the game with 2,307 career points, just 26 points behind Marion Center’s Mindy Young whose 2,333 points between 1984 and 1988 are the most points ever scored by an Indiana County basketball player. Persichetti passed Saltsburg’s Brian Pizer for third place on the career list in the Panthers’ win over West Shamokin last week. She is 15 points behind Indiana’s Cindy Davies.
River Valley is 25-0 coming into the game tonight. Cambria Heights is 18-6 and coming off an upset of number four seed Marion Center last Wednesday. The Panthers beat the Highlanders by 12 points in their only meeting in December. The winner tonight plays for the district championship on Friday against the winner between Central Cambria and Richland. Also tonight, the Penns Manor girls, at 21-4, host 18-5 Southern Huntingdon in the AA semifinals. Penns Manor destroyed Claysburg-Kimmel, 54-8, last Wednesday while Southern Huntingdon, which endured a coaching change in January, took out United, 55-32. One common opponent: Portage. The Rockets beat the Mustangs, 68-56, in their season opener back in November. The Comets beat the Mustangs, 68-26, in January.
The other semifinal features top seed Bishop McCort against Bellwood Antis. You can hear Penns Manor/Southern Huntingdon on 92.5 FM U92 tonight.
